Passing of the Torch
IJ Holton students are only a member of the team for one school year due to our building set up. .At the end of the VEX season students run a boot camp for incoming 6th graders who are interested in being a part of the team the following school year. This team members teach skills that will be important to next years team. Students learn the importance of the team engineering notebook, programming, building techniques, and the importance of teamwork. The VEX team members take on a leadership role to coach and mentor incoming candidates. This boot camp gives students to opportunity to learn but also gives them the opportunity to decide if being a part of the VEX robotics competition team is right for them.
Continued Mentoring
While the previous years team no longer attends school at IJ Holton they continue to be mentors to the incoming team. Past team members use their leadership skills to come help new team members learn important skills and over come challenges. The current VEX team is supported by students with skills in building and programming. This continued mentoring is key to the teams success. This is a great opportunity for all students to benefit from their role in this collaboration.
Team Commitment
Students commit a great deal of time to the VEX team. With any team hard work is necessary to be successful. Students practice 4 days a week. The team also has extended Friday practices where students have the opportunity to work with their teams for an extended period of time. Teams commit to prioritizing their activities to ensure their ability to attend practices. Each individual plays an important role on the team.
